Italy gets the better of Australia again at the Davis Cup
This time last year Australia and Italy were fighting it out for Davis Cup glory, with Italy claiming the spoils.
In 2024 Australia again faced Italy, but in the semifinals.
Thanasi Kokkinakis took on Matteo Berrettini in what turned into an epic match.
Kokkinakis took the first set when it looked like the Italian had taken control.
Berrettini hit back in the second set and sent the match to a decider.
Both players held serve until the 11th game when Kokkinakis had jumped to 15-0. Berrettini then played an amazing slap shot from deep in the corner, he found a good angle to hit a winner that stunned his opponent.
From there is was all the Italian as he quickly had two break points at 15-40. Kokkinakis surrended the break with a weak forehand that he pushed wide.
Berrettini sealed the victory with a pin point accurate ace at 40-15. The final score was 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-5.
The match that followed saw Alex de Minaur take an 0-8 head to head record into the match against world no. 1 Jannik Sinner.
Sinner raced to a 2-0 lead before de Minaur showed some fight and got back to 2-2, but he could not hold off the Italian, Sinner taking the first set after 40 minutes.
In the second set it took just one break for Sinner to claim the victory and send the Italians back to the Davis Cup final.
The final score was 6-3, 6-4.
