Melbourne – 3 February 2021: Nick Kyrgios (AUS)

The big news earlier was that Nick Kyrgios is making his much anticipated return to tournament tennis in Brisbane. He has a protected ranking of no. 21.

Other Australians in the field include world no. 24 Alexei Popyrin and no. 26 Jordan Thompson.

It is interesting to see some players that competed in past Canberra Internationals and now have improved their rankings to enter an ATP tour tournament this time around.

Below we take a look at those players.

2024 men’s runner-up Jakup Mensik is now ranked at no. 48 after competing in Canberra as the world no. 167.

Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi was ranked at no. 134 when competing in the 2023 Canberrra International and is now ranked at no. 37. Arnaldi of course played a key role in helping Italy defeat Australia in the 2023 Davis Cup final.

World no. 35 Nicolas Jarry played in Canberra back in 2018 as the world no. 105, he again competed in 2023 as the world no. 157, losing in the opening round to eventual finalist Leandro Riedi from Switzerland.

Former world no. 7 David Goffin used the Canberra International as a springboard back to top flight tennis after dropping to world no. 111 at the start of the year. He reached the quarterfinals losing to eventual champion Dominik Koepfer from Germany.

Another top player to have passed through Canberra is Sebastian Korda. He competed in the 2018 Canberra International as a qualifier, losing to Jeremy Beale in Q3. Korda would climb to world no. 15 and is currently at no. 22.

In the women’s field world no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka headlines the field, along with world no. 7 Jessica Pegula, world no. 8 Emma Navarro and world no. 9 Daria Kasatkina.

Australia’s Ajla Tomlanovic received a wildcard.
