Gadecki falls short at first title shot in Guadalajara
Australia’s Olivia Gadecki has gone close to claiming her first title and becoming the first Australian female to win a WTA title since Ash Barty in January 2022, when the 22-year-old Australian lost a hard fought final against Poland’s Magdalena Frech.
The match was won 7-6(5), 6-4 by the Polish world no. 43 who was playing in her second WTA final after losing the first time around earlier this year.
After both players didn’t drop serve in the first set it came down to the tie-breaker. At 5-5 Gadecki hit wide on a service return and Frech then wrapped up the set.
In the second set it was a different story, Gadecki got an early break only to see her opponent break back for 2-2. Frech was then serving for the title at 5-3 after another break of the Gadecki serve.
Gadecki got herself back on serve only to again get broken to see Frech lift her first WTA trophy.
“Being in the top 100 has been a massive goal of mine since I was very young, and to now be in that range is incredible,” Gadecki said.
With the final appearance at the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara, Gadecki has jumped to no. 88 in the rankings, up 64 places in just one week.
