Gadecki charges into top-100 and reaches first WTA final
Australia’s Olivia Gadecki has continued her good run at the Guadalajara Open and has reached the final after defeating Colombia’s Camila Osoria 6-2, 6-3.
Gadecki, as a result of reaching the WTA 500 final will now sit at around no. 88 on the rankings when they are updated on Monday. That sees her as the top-ranked Australian woman.
Gadecki started the week by defeating former US Open champion Sloane Stephens. The Gold Coast resident then backed that up by defeating the no. 2 seed and world no. 11 Danielle Collins.
Wins that followed over Italy’s Martina Trevisan and Colombia’s Camila Osorio see the Australian playing in her first ever WTA level final. Gadecki is the first Australian to reach a final at this level since Ash Barty won the Adelaide International title in January 2022.
Gadecki reached the main draw in Guadalajara as a qualifier, so has gone on a six match win streak to reach the final.
Gadecki now faces Poland’s world no. 43 Madalena Frech in the final. 22-year-old Gadecki started the week ranked at no. 152 and will become the lowest ranked player to win a title in 2024 if she claims the Guadalajara title.
It is the first time Frech and Gadecki have faced each other, the winner will claim their first WTA title. Frech was a finalist at the WTA 250 event in Prague back in July, losing to fellow Polish player Magda Linette.
Gadecki easily accounted for Osorio in the semifinal, gaining a break at 3-2 after a wickedly angled forehand that forced an error from her Colombian opponent.
A well constructed point that ended with a nice angled volley saw Gadecki consolidate the break and extend her lead to 4-2.
Another break of serve followed and Gadecki took the first set 6-2.
Gadecki saved a break point in the opening game of the second set with a delicate drop volley. The Australian then broke her opponent in the second game to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Gadecki was broken once in the second set but was able to break Osorio twice to seal the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
