Djokovic closes in on Nadal for all-time Grand Slam singles wins as he denies Kyrgios first Grand Slam singles title
Novak Djokovic has defeated Nick Kyrgios 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to claim his fourth straight Wimbledon title and his seventh in total.
The win also takes him to 21 Grand Slam singles titles, just one behind Rafael Nadal.
Kyrgios showed no sign of nerves as he took the opening set.
Momentum changed in the fourth game when a lazy Kyrgiosforehand off of Djokovic’s return went into the net. Another unforced error on a forehand and Kyrgios was down 0-30.
Djokovic was working at Kyrgios’ backhand and finally, he hit a winner to bring up three break points. A net cord that fell onto Kyrgios’ side sealed the first-ever break of serve for Djokovic against the Australian.
The break was consolidated after a bit of a battle in the next game, but it was now 4-1 to Djokovic.
Kyrgios had four break-back points in the ninth game however he wasn’t able to convert and the set went to the Serbian 6-3.
Games went with serve in the third set until Djokovic won the ninth game to break his opponents serve. Kyrgios was at 40-0 before losing the next five points.
Djokovic held serve to move one set closer to victory.
Both players held serve comfortably in the fourth set which saw a tiebreaker needed to decide the set.
Kyrgios was first to serve and would double fault when going for a big second serve that just missed down the T.
After serving two lets, Djokovic hit his first serve and worked his way into the net to hit a volley winner.
The defending champion then hit a forehand into the net to concede his early mini break.
A long rally followed on the next point and it was Kyrgios that hit a forehand wide to go 1-3 down. A backhand unforced error that was also hit wide saw Kyrgios down 1-4 and yelling at his box.
Djokovic went to a 5-1 lead when Kyrgios launched at a forehand that he hit into the net.
Another unforced error from Kyrgios and it was Djokovic at 6-1.
A big serve setup Kyrgios for an easy put away at the net, then an Ace and it was 6-3 with Djokovic serving for the championship.
Kyrgios would hit a shot into the net to see Djokovic claim his seventh Wimbledon title and his fourth straight. The final score was 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3).
