Top seed Kateryna Baindl from Ukraine has lost her opening round match at the ITF W60 Canberra International tennis.

In what was a good day for the Brits it was Heather Watson that defeated Baindl 6-4, 6-1. Baindl is ranked at no. 99.

On the same court Lesia Tsurenko took out the second seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-6(4), 6-2. The match ending under lights following a spectacular sunset.

Schmiedlova fell during the match and grazed her knee, she was able to continue without treatment.

Earlier in the day Katie Boulter easily accounted for Han Na-Lae 6-0, 6-1. Countrywoman Jodie Burrage defeated Korea’s Jang Su Jeong.
