de Minaur claims first top-5 scalp in Paris
Australia’s Alex de Minaur has fought back from a break down in the third set to claim his first victory against a top-5 player.
In round 2 in Paris, he defeated the world no. 4 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
Medvedev served two double faults in the final game, including a double on match point at 30-40.
de Minaur will face Frances Tiafoe in the next round.
Medvedev looked to be in control after winning the second set comfortably and then breaking in the opening game of the third.
The former world no. 1 held serve to consolidate his break. de Minaur would break back in the fourth game to level at 2-2.
Medvedev held a break point in the ninth game but was unable to convert.
de Minaur had two match points on Medvedev’s serve in the 10th game but Medvedev held on.
The Russian could not fight off the break points in the 12th game to give de Minaur the victory.
