At least one Australian women will reach round one as Priscilla Hon and Kimberly Birrell face each other in round two. If Astra Sharma can get the better of Oksana Selekhmeteva, Australia will be guaranteed one woman advancing as Sharma would face the winner of Birrell and Hon.
Hon and Birrell played each other just last week in the round of 64 in Brisbane, with Birrell getting the win before having a run to the quarterfinals. Hon leads the H2H 5-3, stretching all the way back to their first meeting in 2015.
Taylah Preston was impressive on day one when she took care of Mona Barthel 6-1, 6-2. Preston next faces Britain’s world no. 113 Harriet Dart. The Brit thrashed Preston in the Nottingham final back in 2023.
Preston showed some good form last week in the Canberra International.
Australia’s lowest ranked woman to take part in the qualifying is Elena Micic at no. 424. She defeated Elena Pridankina 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, the world no. 186 and daughter of one time coach for Daniil Medvedev. Micic next faces former world no. 181 Darya Astakhova, who currently is unranked.
