Australia’s Olivia Gadecki has defeated former world no. 20 Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2 in a round one match.

The Romanian is the no. 1 seed for the tournament.

Gadecki had recently reached back-to-back finals in the Bendigo ITF $25,000 events where she first lost to Asia Muhammad and the she was forced to retire against Jaimee Fourlis in the second final in Bendigo .

Against Buzarnescu it was the Australian the powered to the win in perfect conditions in Canbera.

Buzarnescu is ranked at no. 121, with Gadecki at no. 202.
