Day 3 at the US Open was a tale of rain and redemption. Two Australians advanced to round two, with wildcard Dane Sweeny producing a near-flawless performance against Corentin Moutet and qualifier Tristan Schoolkate grinding through four sets to take out fellow qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy. And the rain intervened to keep Australia’s biggest names alive for Day 4.

Dane Sweeny

Men’s Singles

  • (WC) Dane Sweeny beat Corentin Moutet (FRA) 7-6(4), 6-4, 3-0 retired. Sweeny took the first set in a tiebreak and cruised through the second, then moved up a break early in the third before Moutet retired down3-0. A composed, confident performance from the wildcard — and a major statement on his Slam debut. Rd 2 vs (13) Lorenzo Musetti (ITA).
  • (Q) Tristan Schoolkate beat (Q) Nishesh Basavareddy (USA) 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. A classic qualifier’s grind. Dropping the second set was the only blip — Schoolkate steadied, lifted his first-strike game, and outlasted Basavareddy across four. Rd 2 vs (5) Flavio Cobolli (ITA).

Weather Watch — Play Suspended

The rain arrived at Flushing Meadows and forced one of the day’s biggest matches off court:

  • (6) Alex de Minaur vs (Q) Andrea Guerrieri — postponed to Day 4. De Minaur’s first-round matchup didn’t get started on Day 3 as scheduled and will now be played tomorrow.
  • Daria Kasatkina vs Paula Badosa — postponed to Day 4 at 6-1, 5-4, 40-40 (Badosa serving). Kasatkina was a set and a break up and a point from serving for the match when a rain shower sent the players to the change rooms. The match will resume at 40-40 with Badosa serving in the second set.

Day 3 Verdict

Sweeny and Schoolkate give Australian tennis seven men through to round two so far — a strong campaign by any measure. The real fireworks wait for Day 4: de Minaur finally gets his opener, Kasatkina picks up her match two points from the finish line if Badosa holds, and Sweeny and Schoolkate face seeded opposition in Musetti and Cobolli respectively in round two matches..
