Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic has made the most of her wildcard in Brisbane after defeating Esla Jacquemont of France.

The former world no. 32 took the match 6-1, 6-3 to setup a second round against the no. 11 seed Karolina Muchova from Czechia.

Tomljanovic in the past spent time in Brisbane doing training blocks.

“I love this city. I love the vibe,” smiled the 32-year-old. “I can always get my training done in peace and enjoy the weather. And the people are great. Everyone’s so relaxed.”

Tomljanovic started the tournament ranked at no. 80, but now sits at no. 78 on the live rankings. She will of course be looking to go even higher up the rankings with a solid effort in Brisbane.

It wasn’t so good for Daria Kasatkina as she lost to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Like Kasatkina, Potapova formerly played under the Russian flag.
