On day one in Miami, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic advanced to the second round where she face the world no. 2 Naomi Osaka.
In what was an up and down first set, Tomljanovic managed to sneak out with a 7-5 opening set against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova.
The Australian was 4-1 up in the opening set, only to lose four games to be 5-4 down.
The Australian’s first break point came in the opening game after a great backhand took Potapova wide to leave the open court for the forehand winner.
Tomljanovic missed that opportunity after returning the first serve long. Another shot over the baseline saw Potapova at Ad.
Tomljanovic played some more good points for another break point opportunity. This time a backhand winner off the return gave her. the first break.
Potapova immediately broke back after Tomljanovic hit well over the baseline.
Tomljanovic would break twice more with a hold to sit at 4-1.
Serving at 4-5, Tomljanovic faced a set point at 30-40 after hitting wide. Potapova hit long to see the set continue.
A good wide serve forced an error from Potapova. A long ball from the Australian took it to deuce.
Some good defence from the Russian saw Tomljanovic hit long to face another break point. An Ace saved that one.
A swing volley winner from the Russian earned another break point but Tomljanovic hit her own swing volley winner to escape again.
At 5-5 Potapova served a double fault to go 0-40. The world no. 75 saved two before a doule fault gave he world no. 77 opponent a chance to serve for the opening set.
Tomljanovic dropped just one point as she served out the set.
The Russian had an injury timeout in the second set and was not able to compete in the second set. The Australian racing to a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Storm Sanders, a wildcard in Miami looked to be heading to a straight sets victory.
She was serving at 6-1, 5-3 but then lost four consecutive games to see the match at one set all. She hit back again to take the final set and secure a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 over Elisabetta Cocciaretto from Italy.
