Czech Republics Karolina Muchova broke Aussie hearts at the Australian Open when she defeated world no. 1 Ash Barty in the quarterfinals.
Muchova has now taken out world no. 2 Naomi Osaka from the Matua Madrid Open. The world no. 20 winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in one hour and 49 minutes.
Osaka handed Muchova the first break of serve in the opening set after double faulting to fall behind 2-1.
There was just one break back opportunity for Osaka in the first set however she was not able to convert.
Muchova looked to be on her way to a straight sets upset after getting an early break in the second set. However, this time Osaka was about to fight her way back into the set and dominate her opponent.
In the second set Muchova’s first serve percentage drop from 73 per cent in the opener down to 52 per cent in the second but she was able to lift again in the decider.
Muchova got an early break to lead 2-0 and then surged towards another impressive victory in 2021.
The Czech player was able to match the power game from the 2021 Australian Open champion.
Muchova hit 29 winners to 27 and she had 25 unforced errors to 24.
