If Barty lost her semifinal against Elina Svitolina and then Osaka had won the tournament the no. 1 ranking would have changed hands to Osaka.
Barty is looking to defend the Miami title that she won in 2019 as the tournament was not held in 2020.
The semifinal lineup will be:
(1) Ash Barty v (5) Elina Svitolina (UKR)
(8) Bianca Andreescu (CAN) v (23) Maria Sakkari (GRE).
Svitolina leads the H2H against Barty 5-1, however Barty won the biggest meeting of all between the two players when she won the WTA Finals in 2019 against Svitolina. That was also their last meeting.
Andreescu and Sakkari are meeting for the first time.
