Australia’s Ash Barty has moved to 13 straight wins on red clay as she defeated Tamara Zidansek to setup a round three clash with the 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek.
Zidansek had an early break point opportunity in the second game but hit her return just long.
In the sixth game another break point was earned, but again Zidansek was not able to convert with Barty getting in a good first serve to force an error.
The game would be a real struggle for Barty before finally holding to level at 3-3.
Barty held to love to move to 4-4 and with that momentum she was able to break Zidansek on the third break point.
Barty would then serve out the set by holding to love.
The Slovakian world no. 80 responded brilliantly in the second set and she cruised to a 6-1 set scoreline.
Barty had to fight off a break point in the opening game of the deciding set. A good first serve helped with that as it forced a service return error.
After Barty held the opening service game she would earn a break point in Zidansek’s next service game. The world no. 1 would convert to lead 2-0 after her opponent hit into the net.
Barty was taken to deuce before holding serve to consolidate the earlier break.
The Australian was under pressure and faced two break points in the fifth game before holding serve for a 4-1 lead.
Barty closed out the match with a love service game.
The world no. 1 now has a 10-1 record when taken to a third set in 2021.
