John Millman was the only Australian to get onto the courts at Wimbledon and complete his match after rain delayed most of the scheduled matches.
Millman lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) to Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.
Bautista Agut was a surprise semifinalist in 2019 and he has not lost a first round match at Wimbledon.
The Spaniard had a late scare after a fall where he required treatment before closing out the match. This did not please Millman.
Millman was furious with the momentum-crushing time out, noting that he had never before seen a ten-minute delay at such a crucial stage of a game.
“To be honest with you I am a bit annoyed with that,” said Millman.
“Obviously it‘s a bit raw in the mind and I wish things had played out a little bit differently in that tie-breaker. You know, he stopped for ten minutes; whether we could have got the physio earlier I don’t know but that’s a three-all tie breaker in the fourth set. That’s going to stop momentum, you know.”
Christopher O’Connell’s match is in progress against Gael Monfils. The Australian taking the first set 6-4 before the Frenchman hit back taking the second set 6-2. They were locked at 6-6 in the third when play was suspended.
Day two is a big day with the matches listed below all scheduled. Showers are forecast for around 3 pm, so delays are expected.
