Wimbledon is back in 2021 after the 2020 tournament was cancelled.
Five Australians will be playing on day 1. Alex de Minaur, John Millman, Christopher O’Connell and Marc Polmans are competing in the Gentlemen’s tournament.
Sam Stosur is the lone Australian female taking to the court for day one action in the Ladies’ tournament.
Millman will be first on court when he faces 2019 semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut the world no. 10.
The Spaniard has not been in the best of form since reaching the semis in Miami, meanwhile Millman has struggled with a back injury. This points to. a likely win for Bautista Agut.
Marc Polmans who reached the main draw after winning his three matches of qualifying has a golden opportunity to reach the second round.
He takes on Chinese Taipei veteran Yen-Hsun Lu who is ranked at no. 625. Lu, a 37-year-old is using a protected ranking of No.71, was a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2010 and is making his 15th main draw appearance. This is a first Wimbledon for no. 154-ranked Polmans.
After spending a bit of time on grass, Polmans should get this win.
Alex de Minaur faces a tough assignment against Sebastian Korda. The 20-year-old American has started to make a name for himself, coming out of the shadows of father Petr, an Australian Open champion.
de Minaur comes off a good week in Eastbourne where he won the title and took his ranking to a career-high of no. 15. de Minaur should get the win although Korda could pull off an upset.
Another qualifier, Christopher O’Connell faces the 13th seed Gael Monfils of France. This is a match that O’Connell could win as Monfils has struggled to claim a win in 2021.
Monfils just last week lost to Australia’s Max Purcell in round one at Eastbourne. I am tipping an upset in this match.
Finally we see Sam Stosur facing USA’s Shelby Rogers. World no. 46 Rogers is the raging favourite in this match. Call is wishful thinking, but Stosur for the win.
