Barty defeated Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1. 6-3. The Australian will face Great Britain’s Harriet Dart who is a wildcard.
In 2018 Barty lost to Daria Kasatkina in the third round. That triggered some changes that she wanted to make and started her run to the world no. 1 ranking.
In round one Barty took a little time to adjust to conditions. In the match against Van Uytvanck she was straight away in the groove and she raced through the first set.
Barty had just two unforced errors in the opening set along with six winners. Her opponent matched the winners count but made seven unforced errors. The no. 1 converted two break points from three and did not offer a break point.
In the second set Barty hit eight winners to four and had five unforced errors to 10 from Van Uytvanck.
