Nine Australians went into day one singles action, we saw five collect a win.
John Millman was the first Aussie to see a result, losing in five sets to France’s Corentin Moutet 6-4, 6-7(4), 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Frenchman had a good week in the warmup tournament, reaching the semifinals of the Murray River Open.
Nick Kyrgios playing in his first Grand Slam since the 2020 Australian Open was broken in his first service game against Frederico Ferreira Silva.
Kyrgios broke back following a marathon game three that last 15 minutes 18 seconds.
In the next game Kyrgios levelled at 2-2 after a game that lasted just 1 min 39 seconds.
From that moment however he was pretty comfortable and cruised to a straight sets win, although he was broken in the second game of the third set after having broken his opponent in the opening game.
James Duckworth was impressive in his match against Damir Dzumhur, also winning in straights sets.
Duckworth was broken in is opening service game before immediately breaking back for 1-1. The players again exchanged breaks before Duckworth held for 3-2. Another break and then a hold for the Australian had him at 5-2.
Both players held to see Duckworth take the first set 6-3 after 37 minutes.
In the second set Duckworth broke Dzumhur in the fifth game to lead 3-2. He consolidated the break for 4-2. Another break and hold and the set was wrapped up at 6-2 in 27 minutes.
In the third set Duckworth broke in the seventh game to lead 4-3. From there both players held and Duckworth took the match 6-3, 6-2, 6-4
Alex Bolt carried over his good form from last week and won the first two sets 6-2, 6-2 before Norbert Gombos won the third set.
In the opening set Bolt broke twice before Gombos got one break back for 5-2, however Bolt broke for a third time to close out the set 6-2.
Bolt broke in the sixth and eighth games to take the second set in 26 minutes. In the third set Gombos broke in the seventh game for 4-3. Two more holds and he claimed the set.
In the fourth set Bolt broke in the second game to take an early lead. Players held serve from there to see Bolt claim the match 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Marc Polmans has again been involved in a five set opening round match. Two years ago he lost in five, before last year winning in five.
In 2021 Polmans lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3 against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics. The match last four hours and 12 minutes.
Bernard Tomic took to the court with his knee taped, he had missed the warmup tournament due to injury. Playing his first match since qualifying for the Open, Tomic dropped the opening set 6-3 against Japan’s Yuichi Sugita.
Tomic cruised back into the match, winning the second 6-1. In the third set Sugita had treatment for a stomach issue, in the end he was forced to retire from the match at 4-2.
Ajla Tomljanovic won in style, claiming a win over world no. 84 Misaki Doi of Japan.
Tomljanovic broke in the third game of the first set for a 2-1 lead, only to drop serve in the next game. From there is was all the Australian, although it took a 10 minute game by Doi that saw Tomljanovic get the break.
It was all Tomljanovic in the second set and she took the match 6-2, 6-1.
Kimberley Birrell made her return to top class tennis and it was pretty. She lost the first set 6-0 against Canada’s Rebecca Marino.
Birrell competed better in the second set and went down in a tiebreaker. The Australian did hold a set point at 6-5 but was not able to close it out.
Lizette Cabrera ranked at no. 140 lost to world no. 2 Simona Halep of Romania 6-2, 6-1. In a big moment for Cabrera she played the match on Rod Laver Arena.
