Australia’s Jordan Thompson has fought back from seeing his opponent serving for the match to steal a 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-5 victory against Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo.
He advances to a quarterfinal match against Daniel Elahi Galan, another Colombian that took out the no. 1 seed and two-time defending champion Steve Johnson.
Former world no. 28 and current no. 224 Giraldo took the opening set after breaking Thompson in the ninth game after jumping out to 0-40. The Colombian needed just one swing at a break point, hitting a return winner. Giraldo then served out the set.
Giraldo looked in control when he broke Thompson in the third game of the second set after going on the attack. Things would change quickly with Thompson winning the next four games to lead 5-2.
The more experience Colombian held serve to see Thompson serving for the second set a 5-3. The Australian was broken and then games went with serve to take the match to a tie-breaker.
Thompson, the world no. 67 dominated the breaker, winning 7-1 to level the match.
After looking a forlorn figure as he made his way to the change of ends a 6-0 in the breaker it was Giraldo that found something to strike back in the deciding set. He broke Thompson in the 8th game to be serving for the match at 5-3.
The Colombian was two points from the match at 30-30. Thompson wasn’t going away. In a long rally, Thompson took his opponent wide to the forehand corner then with a short ball he hit a winner into the open backhand side, this was helped as Giraldo momentarily lost his footing.
Thompson was back on serve after Giraldo hit the ball over the baseline on the next point. He held for 5-5 and then he saw Giraldo hit wide on the first point of the next game. A shot blasted long by the Colombian saw the score at 0-30.
A big forehand forced an error from Thompson for 15-30. Another forehand winner by Giraldo after a brutal rally saw him back at 30-30.
Giraldo was facing a break point after he did not get around a forehand and saw the shot sail wide. He lost the game when he lined up a big backhand that he hit well wide.
Thompson had swung things around from facing his opponent serving for the match, to himself serving to win the match. The Australian, serving with new balls hit a good wide first serve that Giraldo shanked wide. Another shot wide of the line had Thompson at 30-0.
The Australian held three match points after Giraldo hit a backhand wide, then the match was his after Giraldo returned a backhand wide.
A gutsy comeback for the 24-year-old.
Thompson served at 61% but won 78@ of first serve points compared to 68% of 1st serves in and 63% of 1st serve points for Giraldo.
It will be the third quarterfinal appearance for Thompson in 2019. He reached that stage at the Sydney International and at the New York Open.
Galan is currently ranked at no. 241.
