Ukraine’s Elena Svitolina has claimed back-to-back titles in Rome after defeating world no. 1 Simona Halep 6-0, 6-4.
As the score suggests, Svitolina dominated the first set as Halep’s game was riddled with errors. She had more than 20 errors in the first set.
“It was a really good match from my side. I think I dominated all the match. I was trying to put lots of pressure on Simona with my game, tried to really take the ball early and to open the court,” Svitolina said following her title win.
After such a poor first set, Halep lifted her play in the second set and made Svitolina work for her win. The impressive part of Svitolina’s play was that she did not concede a single break-point opportunity throughout the match.
The title in Rome is the third of 2018 for Svitolina after also claiming titles in Dubai and Brisbane.
After this title win, Svitolina will go into the French Open as one of the favourites.
