After Ajla Tomljanovic, the fourth-ranked Australian women’s player was bundled out of Wimbledon on day one, the top three Australian women have all won in straight sets to advance to round two on day two.
17-Ashleigh Barty d Stefanie Voegele (SUI) 7-5, 6-3.
26-Daria Gavrilova d Caroline Dolehide (USA) 6-2, 6-3.
Samantha Stosur v Peng Shaui (CHN) 6-4, 7-5.
Barty recently won the Nottingham WTA event defeating last year’s Wimbledon semifinalist Johanna Konta. The two other Australians had also got a few grass court wins under their belt. Barty’s win over Voegele was her first singles win at Wimbledon from three attempts.

Gavrilova found herself against a lucky loser, USA’s Caroline Dolehide who had lost to Vera Zvonareva at Roehampton, and during that match, the American badly turned her ankle. Dolehide recovered quickly enough to take her place in the main draw. Gavrilova lost in the first round in 2015 and 2017 and the second round in 2016. She will be looking to give her ranking a boost with a good tournament in 2018.

Stosur faced Peng Shuai from China, a player that Stosur holds a comfortable 8-1 head-to-head lead. The two players were meeting each other on grass for the first time. All the other matches took place on clay hor hard courts. Stosur is playing in her 15th Wimbledon singles event and has reached the third round on three occasions. She has also had six first-round exits and five second-round exits.
