Next up for de Minaur is Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta.
Barty was cruising in her opening round match, she quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead before allowing Pegula to get back on serve.
The world no. 8, however, managed to break again and then serve out the set.
In the second set, Barty was able to break her opponent on three occasions but gave up one break of serve herself.
Both players hit 17 winners during the match, but Pegula let herself down with 23 unforced errors to 15 by Barty.
Next up for Barty is Danielle Collins from the USA. Collins ran hot at the Australian Open to reach the semifinals, she has however struggled since then.
Barty defeated Collins a few weeks ago in Madrid, taking the match 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in round two.
Two other Australians saw round one action on day two. Astra Sharma lost 6-3, 6-3 to USA’s Shelby Rogers.
