Kimberly Birrell from Queensland faced Western Australia’s Astra Sharma for a spot in the Australian Open.
Astra Sharma opened the serving and won the first game before getting the first break of the match to lead 2-0. A Sharma winner at 15-15 was followed up by a Birrell double fault to hand Sharma two break points. Birrell then saw a second serve clip the net and then sail long for the break.
In the next game, Birrell got to deuce and then with some great court coverage kept the ball in play until Sharma finally hit an unforced error to concede a break point. Another error came and games were back on serve at 2-1.
The no. 8 seed Birrell then had another break opportunity at 2-2 but Sharma hit some nice down the line shots to take the game. Games went with serve until 4-4. Sharma was serving and badly missed a backhand on the opening point. Birrell hit just long on the next point for 15-15.
Birrell went on the attack to work her way into the net and hit a volley to the open court. Sharma then hit a shot into the net to give Birrell two break points. The first was saved after Birrell could not handle a serve into her body. Then an unforced error from Birrell took the score to deuce. A nice deep return from Birrell forced an error from Sharma to set up another break point. Sharma hit well wide to give Birrell a 5-4 lead. She served to love to take the opening set.
In the next set Birrell raced to a 4-0 lead before Sharma finally won a game to see Birrell serving at 4-1. Birrell’s nice deep groundstrokes were proving too much for Sharma.
After Sharma had held serve Birrell was serving for her spot in the Australian Open. She had two match points at 40-15 but needed her second chance on which she hit a nice forehand winner to win the match.
Birrell a winner in Darwin earlier this year took the wildcard without dropping a set. Birrell will be playing in her second Australian Open main draw after having received a wildcard into the 2016 Open.
